Description

Mtskheta and Tbilisi are 2 capitals of Georgia: one is an ancient capital, the other is modern.

Mtskheta remained the ancient capital and remains the unchanged satellite city of Tbilisi. We prefer to start our group program with a tour of two cities from Mtskheta: after all, Mtskheta was the first!

And even though Mtskheta is an ancient capital, after its restoration it is a super modern city with a claim to eternity.

On an excursion to Mtskheta, we will touch the history of Orthodoxy in Georgia and visit the most iconic and holy places! Mtskheta is an ancient city, the first capital of Georgia. Now it is a beautiful small town where the main cathedral of all Georgia is located – Svetitskhoveli, which is a UNESCO monument – the main spiritual center of Orthodoxy in Georgia. This is where Christ’s tunic is kept!

We will visit the souvenir market where you can buy authentic Georgian women’s jewelry, souvenirs and Georgian delicacies and spices.
If time permits (optional), we will get acquainted with the Transfiguration Church (Samtavro) just 7 minutes walk from Svetitskhoveli. This is the second largest temple in Mtskheta, now a convent. A very calm and charming place with an interesting history.
Optionally, if time permits, we will approach the Bebristsikhe fortress, located on the northern outskirts of Mtskheta. Although only the walls on the cliff have survived, but the heights of Bebristsikhe, you can take a gorgeous panoramic photo!
By bus we will climb the mountain where the Big Temple of the Cross – Jvari is located, from the territory of the temple opens the famous panorama of the confluence of the Aragva and Kura rivers. Jvari is one of the masterpieces of architecture in terms of the perfection of architectural forms and the first UNESCO monument in Georgia.
Return to Tbilisi.

We will start the sightseeing tour of Tbilisi from our traditional route: from Pushkin Square to Svobody Square, so that new participants who want to get to know only Tbilisi can easily join us. The description of the excursion can be read here >>> Sightseeing tour of Tbilisi
