Why Sighnaghi?

The Georgian city of Sighnaghi is located in the east of Kakheti and is known as the “City of Love”. Sighnaghi was also one of the many points on the route of the Great Silk Road. Sighnaghi is just over an hour away from Tbilisi, making it the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. In the direction of Sighnaghi, you can make many one-day tours and interesting small excursions.

A few years ago, the infrastructure in the city improved significantly, making Sighnaghi even more attractive in terms of tourism. Gambling in casinos, luxury hotels and restaurants, fine wines and stunning views of the Alazani Valley make Sighnaghi one of the most interesting cities in Georgia.

The city is located on the top of a cliff overlooking the Alazani Valley, which is one of the most famous wine-producing regions of Georgia. Sighnaghi is a great place to start a tour of the leading wine region in Georgia. Several vineyards and wineries are just a few minutes’ drive from the city center, and scenic views of the Greater Caucasus Mountains add a special zest to the local scenery.

Like many other cities and regions of Georgia, Sighnaghi is rich in important historical and cultural sites. Its charming cobbled streets and alleys, restored wooden carved balconies and detailed facades of the buildings of the old center give the city a romantic mystique. Called the “City of Love”, Sighnaghi has become a popular wedding venue.

Flight

The flight is carried out from Tbilisi. You can get to Sighnaghi by minibus. The distance between the cities is just over 100 km. Minibuses from Tbilisi depart from a small station located near the Samgori metro station. Before departure, you must provide a certificate of vaccination against COVID-19

prices

Prices for accommodation and food in Sighnaghi are not too different from prices in Tbilisi. The city began to unwind as one of the popular tourist centers of Georgia relatively recently, so here you can find accommodation from 25 to 345 USD per night. Things are not going well with public catering: there are not so many cafes in this small town. Therefore, I advise you to choose accommodation with breakfast. There are many such proposals.

Accommodation

Sighnaghi is an ideal place to live in a traditional Georgian family. Many guest houses are available at incredibly low rates and booking is usually optional. We analyzed them and tried to choose the most optimal hotels in terms of price-quality ratio according to various criteria here

CUISINE AND RESTAURANTS

Sighnaghi has several restaurants serving a wide range of dishes. Here you can try Georgian cuisine, European and even Latin cuisine. Be sure to visit the famous local winery "Pheasant's Tears", where you will not only taste several types of Kakhetian wine, but also enjoy local cuisine with a magnificent view of the Alazani Valley. The restaurant's menu is periodically updated, as they strictly monitor the freshness of products, so you can try different dishes in different seasons. There are plenty of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner for both vegetarians and meat lovers. Be sure to check out Pheasant's Tears winery to taste excellent organic wines made according to traditional Georgian technology!

Transport

Sighnaghi is a safe city. Tourists here can safely walk along the cozy streets of the city center at any time of the day. Since this is a small town with a population of less than 3,000 inhabitants, even during the high tourist season (spring and summer), life is seething here until midnight at most. In the off-season, establishments may close even earlier, depending on the weather and the number of customers. Sighnaghi is easily accessible by daily shuttle bus from Samgori metro station in Tbilisi. The trip takes from 1.5 to 2 hours. Taxi to Sighnaghi and back should be booked privately in one of the many taxi services that are incredibly convenient in Georgia. The services of private cabs will be much more expensive.

SHOPPING: SHOPS

Sighnaghi is not a place for shopping. This is the place for romance. At the entrance to the city on Baratashvili Street there is a Populi market, modest in size and assortment. And on the streets and squares of this miniature town, you can see a lot of homemade shops selling local souvenirs. Of course, the main souvenirs are wine bottles of various shapes and designs. After all, Kakheti is, first of all, a wine paradise. You can find reproductions of Pirosmani's paintings made on various media, including fridge magnets.
